What is Micro Fiber?

BACKGROUND

In the United States, microfiber cleaning products are viewed as, “Exciting, Brand New, Unbelievable, Revolutionary, Space-Age Technology!” In Europe, however, business and families have been enjoying the many benefits of microfiber cleaning towels for over ten years. Out of necessity, Europe is more concerned about environmental issues than we are; therefore, microfiber cleaning product technology was accepted in most European countries in the 1980’s, almost as soon as it was developed. In contrast, most North Americans have only enjoyed microfiber cleaning products for the last few years. For a product so incredibly useful, environmentally friendly, and cost effective, less than 2% of the entire population of North America has even HEARD of microfiber.

WHAT IS MICROFIBER?

Microfiber is a man-made product that is best used in cleaning applications by combining two basic fibers, Polyester and Polyamide (a nylon by-product.) These fibers are then “split” and formed into a blend of 80% Polyester (the scrubbing and cleaning fiber), and 20% Polyamide (the absorbing and quick drying fiber.) In written form, this blend is expressed as “80/20.” There are approximately 200,000 microfibers in one square inch of a microfiber towel. A single strand of microfiber is so small that it is almost invisible to the naked eye.

Take a close look at the photo above. This is an actual microphotograph of a cross section of one strand of microfiber. This photograph occupies approximately one square inch of space on this page. It would take 200,000 microfibers to fill the space that this photograph occupies! Consider the fact that one square yard of a microfiber cleaning towel, if torn apart and the fibers laid end-to-end, would reach from Miami FL to Minneapolis MN!

The graphic shown below further helps illustrate how microfiber cleans so much better than other materials.

STYLES:

Microfiber is available in several different constructions. Each construction provides different features and benefits. At MP, we only offer the exclusive ULTRA MICROFIBER in all of our products. Ultra microfiber represents the very highest quality microfiber available. All of the superior quality raw materials used in our manufacturing processes are a requirement for using the “Ultra Microfiber” designation. The most common constructions are the “Terry Style” and the “Suede Style.” The terry style is best suited for all general cleaning purposes, both domestic and industrial. Suede works best in any “polishing” application, such as eye glasses, sun-glasses (except transitional A/R), all optics and lens’, CD’s, computer screens, TV screens, jewelry, coins, leather and even as a replacement for a chamois to dry off your car. Both of these styles can be used wet or dry, without soap or chemicals (chemical CAN be used with microfiber, but usually they are not needed!) Unlike ordinary cleaning towels that only move or push the dirt and dust from one point to another, microfiber actually “scrapes” the dirt or stain from the surface, and then stores the dirt particles in the towel, until it is washed. Most of the time, it is best to use the suede towel dry, however, it will never harm the towel if you want to wet it. With both of these towel styles, when using wet, it is very important to always wring the towel as dry as possible. If a microfiber towel is dripping water, it is too wet, and could leave streaks on the surface you are cleaning. REMEMBER: WET IT—WRING IT—CLEAN IT!

FEATURES & BENEFITS:

1.     Ultra Microfiber is HYPOALLERGENIC, thus not creating problems with those suffering from allergies or asthma.

2.     Ultra Microfiber is NON ELECTROSTATIC.

3.     Ultra Microfiber is SUPER ABSORBENT, absorbing over 7 times its weight in water.

4.     Ultra Microfiber DRIES IN 1/3 THE TIME of ordinary cleaning towels.

5.     Ultra Microfiber is ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY, requiring no soap or chemicals of any kind.

6.     Ultra Microfiber is over 4 TIMES MORE EFFECTIVE than ordinary cleaning towels, WILL CLEAN VIRTUALLY ANY STAIN FROM ANY SURFACE, is MORE PLUSH & LONGER LASTING than other cleaning products and CONTAINS MORE THAN 200,000 FIBERS PER SQUARE INCH OF PRODUCT.

7.     Ultra Microfiber is totally LINT FREE AND NON-ABRASIVE.

CARE:

If the towel becomes too dirty, it will also begin to “streak”. It is then time to wash the towel. This is easily done by just throwing the towel, or any other microfiber cleaning product, into any washing machine, and washing with any soap or detergent you prefer. The only restriction in the wash cycle is to NEVER use any type of FABRIC SOFTENER. The towel will treat the fabric softener as if it was dirt. It will try to store the tiny particles of the softener in the towel fibers and may cause the towel to be less effective

RECENT SCIENTIFIC MICROFIBER STUDY:

The “Royal Roads University,” in Victoria, British Columbia, is a highly respected institution, worldwide. The university is “committed to developing and maintaining high standards of environmental stewardship. Its goal is to become a global leader in environmental sustainability through innovative strategies, which foster the protection and preservation of the environment.” In 2001, Royal Roads invested $840,000 for the creation and implementation of a virtually Chemical Free cleaning system. This new system relies exclusively upon microfiber cleaning products, and many additional independent sources were utilized to further the independence of this study’s findings.

The final results of this independent study found the following facts regarding microfiber, to hold true:

Lessons Learned:

1.     Microfiber cleaning products leave the surface of the item being cleaned “Free of any foreign material.”

2.     Microfiber products “Do not cross contaminate.”

3.     As microfiber products can be used wet, there is no need to mechanically dry them. By avoiding the use of commercial dryers, “Significant additional energy costs are avoided.”

4.     “Microfiber cloths & mops, used only with regular tap water, are 99.94% effective in removing bacteria from smooth surfaces, as compared to conventional cloths and mops used with Lysol or bleach, which were only 91.89% effective.”

5.     Microfiber products “do not negatively impact the shine value of the surface being cleaned.”

6.     Microfiber “mops allow a greater area to be cleaned than conventional mops, and microfiber mops are 5 times less expensive to clean.”

Costs & Benefits:

1.     Reduced environmental impact.

2.     Saves substantial time & money.

3.     Fewer allergic reactions.

4.     Decreased risk of backs and shoulder problems.

5.     Reduced chance of spills & chemical related accidents.

6.     Improved public safety, slip & falls reduced or eliminated.

7.     Microfiber cloths can be reused a minimum of 500 times.

8.     Cloths & mops are light and can therefore be washed in large quantities, greatly reducing water and energy consumption.

9.     Cloths & mops take up less physical space and therefore reduce both transport costs and area required for storage closets.

10.  This system provides for very substantial cost and labor savings, on a yearly basis, as the system is more efficient.

Conclusion of this study:
(by Michael Archibald, director of the study)

“Reduced environmental impact, healthier people, fewer accidents and injuries are priceless savings. This system is simple, efficient and effective, and represents the ‘next Generation” in cleaning systems. Lastly, this system is as effective as cleaning with chemicals.”

KNOWLEDGE:

It is very important that the company that you purchase your microfiber products from understands the subtle differences between all of the blends, styles, colors and textures that are available. Certain tasks, such as car detailing, have very different needs and microfiber requirements than floor cleaning. Cleaning a kitchen or bathroom requires a far different microfiber cleaning towel than does cleaning printers’ ink from a printing press. At MP, we offer you 8 different “constructions” of ultra microfiber cloth. While this requires massive inventory requirements, it insures that we can always offer you the best product for your needs. We are not aware of ANY other supplier that offers you this degree of flexibility.

Most of the facts outlined above are not fully understood by many microfiber resellers. By understanding these basic concepts, you will be far more knowledgeable than 90% of your competitors. At MP, all of our staff is well trained in all of the microfiber requirements for any of your potential needs. If you have questions, always feel free to call for our advice, even if you make your purchase elsewhere.
